Prenatal & Pregnancy Physio.

Specialist physiotherapy through every trimester, managing pain, preparing for birth, and helping you stay active through pregnancy.

Pregnancy physiotherapy consult, Forward Health

A different kind of pregnancy care

Pregnancy isn't something to get through.

Aches, pelvic pressure, leaking and pain during sex are common in pregnancy, but common doesn't mean you have to live with it. Most pregnancy-related discomfort responds beautifully to skilled physio, and the earlier we treat it, the easier the rest of your pregnancy tends to be.

Our prenatal physiotherapists have advanced training in pregnancy and pelvic health. We see women from the first positive test through to the night before birth, and we work alongside your GP, midwife and obstetrician (private or public) to make sure your care is joined up.

When to come in

Ideally, we like to see you at least once during pregnancy, even if nothing's bothering you, to assess your pelvic floor, screen for diastasis risk and chat through birth prep.

Don't wait until pain stops you sleeping. Early treatment is faster, gentler and far more effective than letting things build up.

Conditions we treat

Pregnancy conditions we see every day.

If something below sounds like what you're experiencing, we can almost certainly help. If your situation isn't listed, give us a call, pregnancy throws curveballs, and chances are we've seen it before.

Pelvic & lower body

  • Pelvic girdle pain (PGP)
  • Pubic symphysis pain (SPD)
  • Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain
  • Sciatica during pregnancy
  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain and bursitis
  • Round ligament pain
  • Coccyx (tailbone) pain
  • Restless legs and cramping
  • Vulval varicose veins and swelling

Upper body, abdomen & pelvic floor

  • Mid-back and rib pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • De Quervain's tenosynovitis
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Diastasis recti prevention
  • Bladder leakage in pregnancy
  • Pelvic floor weakness or overactivity
  • Constipation and bowel changes
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pre-existing prolapse management

Birth preparation

Preparing your body (and your mind) for birth.

Birth prep with a pelvic health physio is one of the highest-value things you can do in your third trimester. We've helped hundreds of mums on the Sunshine Coast walk into their birth feeling informed, confident and ready.

Perineal massage education

From around 34 weeks, perineal massage has good evidence for reducing tearing and the need for episiotomy. We'll show you how (and your partner, if you'd like), clearly, kindly and without awkwardness.

Pushing & breathing techniques

Learn how to coordinate your breath with active pushing, when to 'breathe baby down', and how to relax your pelvic floor at the right moment.

Birth positions & movement

Practical work on positions that might help in your specific labour, how to use a birth ball, and how to move with intensity rather than fight it. Useful whether you're aiming for an unmedicated birth or planning an epidural.

Exercise & clinical pilates in pregnancy

Stay strong, safely.

Exercising in pregnancy is good for you and good for your baby, but the rules change as your body changes. Our team is trained in clinical pilates and we use it as one of our best tools for keeping you strong and moving well through every trimester.

You can attend clinical pilates either as a 1:1 session with your physio or as part of a small group class. Either way, every exercise is modified to suit your pregnancy stage, your body and any concerns we're managing.

What you can expect to come away with

  • A clear picture of what's safe for your body and your stage of pregnancy
  • 1:1 or small-group clinical pilates, modified to suit your trimester
  • Pelvic floor and deep core integration into your movement
  • Specific modifications for your existing sport or training
  • A return-to-activity plan that scales with your trimester

FAQ

Common questions about prenatal physio.

Do I need a referral from my GP or obstetrician?

No referral is needed to book in with us. Physiotherapy is a primary-contact profession in Australia. That said, if your GP or OB has flagged something specific, please bring any letters or imaging along.

When in pregnancy can I be seen?

From your very first trimester through to the day you give birth. Earlier is generally better. We can prevent a lot of issues from developing if we see you before pain settles in.

Will the assessment include an internal exam?

Only if it's clinically appropriate, and only with your full informed consent. Internal pelvic floor assessments are the gold standard for some conditions but they're never compulsory. An external assessment is always an option, and you can decline at any time.

Is physio safe at all stages of pregnancy?

Yes. When it's done by a clinician with specific perinatal training. We modify our techniques carefully through each trimester and never use anything contraindicated for pregnancy.

Do you take private health rebates?

Yes. We process HICAPS at the clinic so you only pay the gap. Most extras policies cover physiotherapy, check with your fund for your specific limit.
